Gospel
There are many Christian’s today who will tell you that once you have accepted Jesus as Lord and Saviour, you cannot lose your salvation. Is this what the Bible teaches?
Let us look at the parable of the sower and the seed in Matthew 13 and Mark 4, Luke 8. Jesus spoke as He often did in parables using analogies to those He spoke to so they could understand.
In Matthew 13:3 Jesus starts the parable with the sower throwing seeds onto the ground. As He tells the story we can read that some of the seed fell by the wayside and the birds ate them. Some of the seeds fell on hard stony ground so they germinated quickly in the shallow earth only to be burned up by the scorching sun, consequently they withered quickly because they had no depth of soil to burrow their roots into. Some of the seeds fell amongst thorns and thistles, which sprang up and choked them. But some of the seed fell on good ground and yielded a good crop of one hundred, with some sixty and some thirty.
In Paragraph 18 – 23, Jesus explains what this parable means:
The sower is the spreader of the Word of God. Those that heard the word of God but did not fully comprehend it are those whom Satan snatches the little understanding that was sown in their heart. These are the ones who do not continue in the faith and fall by the wayside.
The next group are those who hear the Word of God and receive it with joy. Unfortunately, they have no root within themselves so they endure it only for a short while. When their faith is tried and tested or they are persecuted for believing, they stumble. These are those who fall on stony ground.
Then there are those that fall among thorns. They hear the Word but the cares of this life, and the pursuit of riches choke the Word and they become unfruitful.
And of course the seeds that fell on good ground are those who hear and do the Word of God, sharing their faith with joy and hope and great is the fruit of their labour.
So there are 4 classes of people who receive the word but only one class who fully commit themselves to God. Each of the 4 classes accepted Jesus. 3 classes fall away from Him. Are these three classes still assured their place in Heaven?
Jesus says in Matthew 7: 21-23. Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’
“And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
There will be many who profess Jesus is Lord with their mouths. They will be in Church each Sabbath and at every Pot Luck meal. Only God knows their heart.
In Ezekiel 18:19-31, we read that a wicked man, if he turns from his wickedness and follows the Statutes (Laws) of God, he will live and receive a place in God’s kingdom. All his wicked deeds will be blotted out. Conversely, if a righteous man (someone who has previously accepted and followed Jesus), commits iniquity, reverting to his old fleshly lusts, he will not live. All the righteousness that he did before his wickedness will not be remembered by God and he will not be resurrected with the righteous.
God does not take any pleasure in the death of the wicked. He pleads with us to turn to Him and live, Ezekiel 18:32. It is not God who rejects His children. It is His children who reject Him. Paul informs us in Hebrews 10:26-27 ‘For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of truth, there so longer remains a sacrifice for sins but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries’.
God will never stop pleading for us to return to Him but He will not force anyone to accept His plea. There comes a time when God lets the unrepentant go his or her own way. God’s voice is no longer heard pleading to the sinner to turn and live. His voice has been drowned out - some have fallen by the wayside some have been without root whilst others have been choked by the cares and riches of this world.
Time is running out. If you have accepted Jesus in your heart and are bearing fruit for Him, then you can be assured He has prepared a place for you in His kingdom where there is an eternity to spend on a new reformed Earth with Jesus at the centre of His kingdom.
