“Remember his marvelous works that he hath done; his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth.” Psalm 105:5 and 1 Chronicles 16:12 (KJV)
I’m sure we’ve all heard the old adage “practice makes perfect.” Whether it was learning to read, play an instrument or ride a bike, you were probably told to practice, practice, practice. Some things naturally come easy to us; others must be learned. Counting our blessings may be something that comes naturally when things are going well. But when the car battery is dead and you have an appointment that can’t be missed, it’s a little harder to “give the praise.” Sometimes it takes extra practice to learn to praise through the rough times. With each day, we have a choice to recognize our blessings or to complain.
Psalm 105:5 and 1 Chronicles 16:12 say exactly the same thing. Since God inspired that verse to be included twice in His Word, I believe He wants us to pay special attention to it. Why is it that both the psalmist David and the writer of Chronicles ask us to remember His marvelous works and wonders? As we practice recalling what the Lord has done for us and the good works He has done through us, we can praise Him instead of complaining. Recalling God’s wonders is also a good anecdote to sadness.
The next time you’re having a bad day, give it a try. Practice, practice, practice your remembrance of His marvelous works and give Him thanks.
