My son Steven, age 8, and I were watching the movie Dances with Wolves starring Kevin Costner this even.
In the movie the Indians all have cool names like Stands with a Fist, Kicking Bird, Smiles a Lot and eventually the character John Dunbar, played by Kevin Costner, is given the Indian name Dances with Wolves.
We learn throughout the movie these names are earned and each name says something about each person’s personality. One’s name identifies that person. I was also watching a World War ll movie last week, Destination Tokyo, and the cook on the submarine had a fascination with last names. These were English family names like Cook says they were cooks at one time or Carpenter says they were carpenters and Masons were brick layers and so on. I’m also English and my last name is Bragg so you can figure that one out.
But with the Indians they had no first and last name it was simply just a descriptive name that tells about who they are. Stands with a Fist told about how as a young girl she was bullied by an older woman until she had her fill and one day she hit the woman, knocking her out and then stood over her with her fist raised and announced “is there anyone else who wants to mess with me?” “No one took advantage of me after that day,” she said. So everyone called her Stands with a Fist. The teenage boy smiled throughout the movie and his name was… that’s right… Smiles a Lot. It’s not told in the movie how Kicking Bird, the Holy Man, got his name but it sets one to wonder.
The character John Dunbar is a US Soldier sent out into the Indian Territory in the mid 1800’s. In the movie John Dunbar makes a transition from being a US Soldier to an Indian. The Indians in this movie live off the land and are respectful of the land and animals that support their way of life. Along this transition from US Soldier to Indian John Dunbar decided not to take the life of a wolf for sport and befriends the wolf. Later other soldiers show up and kill the wolf just for sport. About the time John Dunbar’s transition is complete he and the wolf have become friends and the Indians see John and the wolf playing together. So thus, the Indian name John Dunbar receives is Dances with Wolves. John toward the end says I really never knew who John Dunbar was but as I hear my Indian name called I understand now who I am.
About 12 years ago I started my transition. As most of you know before that time I was a true “hellion,” a man consumed by all the carnal lust a man can have. About 12 years ago I came to realize I wanted no more of that life. It cost me so dearly of myself respect, family and friends.
I knew in my heart I had been running from God and it was time to turn, meet and come to know my God, My Creator and Savior. As I began to read my Bible I fell in love with the One who created me. I read about people like Enoch and Noah who walked with God. I read about Abraham who was called a friend of God. And God said, in the Bible, that if I love His Son He would make me His child, son and call me friend.
How can I not love God my Father and my Creator He gave me life. How could I not Love His Son Jesus, Who died in my place that I might become His son? How can I not love The Holy Spirit that empowers me to live for God instead of my flesh? God created me for a relationship, died that that relationship is assured eternally and loves me daily. I am compelled to love Him back with all my heart and all that I am.
At the end of the movie my son Steven asked me who are you daddy what’s your name? With amazement and joy the words flowed from my mouth and heart I’m a child of the King, a child of God, I am the one who loves God and He is the one who loves me my son just like I love you and you love me. I’m the one who walks with God and He walks with me and I am consumed with Him every moment of everyday.
Who am I…? What’s my name? I am The Child of God who Walks with Him and He calls me Friend. My transition is nearly complete, thank You Lord.
WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT IS YOUR NAME?
May the Lord continue to bless us all,
(Steve Bragg) The Friend and Child Who Walks with God
PS Thank you Dr. David Robinson. I finally know my name.
Rev 2:17 'He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, to him I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and a new name written on the stone which no one knows but he who receives it.'
