Poetry
A well known and oft quoted theologian from another era, in one of his sermons coined an idiom that caught on. He used the term cheap grace. Because it is now considered good Christian-ese, some Bible school teachers or other in various stations of learning, scholarship, and erudition borrow from this terminology.
While I understand the danger of gray areas and human error this beloved brother sought to make known and caution against, for me, it has ever been a disturbing choice of language.
As they are wholly contradictory of one another I cannot help but feel the two words used in conjunction become an oxymoron. For grace is either so expensive none but a god, our God, could afford it, or completely and totally free. It must be one or the other: it cannot be lowered, any more than God’s standard may.
Because the Christian who fully appreciates the enormity of their own sin and the world, and what it cost our Lord to expiate that sin, could never (except in a state described in scripture as fallen from grace) believe it or express it as cheap.
Grace, while admittedly taken advantage of in a lascivious manner by some, cannot change: can never its true nature allow to be altered. What God has established let not man tamper with.
Grace is the noon-day sun.
White hot, it cures the rotting flesh.
A ballerina, it step-steps the wood planked floor
And makes the common dust motes dance and light
Glance off their tiny surface
'Til all the air bright and shimmering
Splash up and ‘round,
Lash out the tear and wet wept gratitude
For what it could not
And grace would.
