Scripture Verse
“And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it He rested from all the work of creating that He had done.” – Genesis 2:3 (NIV)
Meditation
At choir rehearsal, we were singing a lively song. The phrases were punctuated with 2-3 beats of rests throughout the piece. At the height of the piece, as we started to crescendo, it was hard to remember the rests. We didn’t want to stop and breathe. We wanted to keep singing. It was exciting! As we worked through that part, our choir director kept reminding us, “Rest! … Rest! … Rest – two – three … Rest!” The crescendo didn’t stop. We had to be willing to rest in the midst of the excitement.
Our walk with God is just like this. How often do we miss His prompt to “Rest!” Especially in the midst of exciting things. We want to keep going – it’s hard to take a break. Yet if we don’t rest in the midst of the busy times, we will burn out. That’s not His best for us.
Throughout Scripture, God’s message is clear: We need to have regular times of rest, and keep a Sabbath, and draw our strength from Him, not from our own momentum. That’s easier to do when we’re worn out, but why wait for that? Why not enjoy rest as a very important part of the exciting things God is doing in our lives. God created everything in the universe – what could be more exciting than that! And right at the height of creation, He rested.
We need to do the same.
Prayer
Father, thank You for the reminders You give us, in Your Word and in our hearts, that we need regular times of rest, and that it’s okay – Your best plan for us, even! – to rest in the midst of the excitement. Help us to keep our Sabbath rest and to daily find rest in Your Spirit. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Thought for the Day
Where do you need more rest time in your schedule, and how will you do that? Start with prayer and ask God to help you.
