TITLE: Broken Spokes in the Wheel of Spoken Promises. By Lucynda Gullia 02/16/04 |

Being an avid cyclist, I relate this cycle of defeat, in my many spoken promises to that of an unbalance wheel.
A bicycle wheel is made up of many spokes that connect to a center hub at one end, and the large round outer rim on the other end. The spokes are the line segment that joins the center hub of the wheel to the rim of the wheel, and keeps the wheel in perfect balance. With time the spokes stretch slightly and/or can break causing an imbalance of the wheel. In bike mechanic terms it would be said “the wheel is out of true”, thus, the wheel needs to be put on a truing stand and the spokes need to be replaced or tightened back up to get the wheel back in balance.
I see the Hub of the wheel as the center and the heart of the matter. The spokes as the spoken promises that where in the heart, and the rim of the wheel as a means of how and where these spoken promises will take shape. In Balance or out of Balance? True or out of true?
Matthew 15:18 says: But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart;
Just as it is with the spokes in a wheel, my many spoken words and promises - will with time stretch or be broken, and will no longer be true; causing an imbalance cycle, or as with a bike - the effect will be the rim in motion wobbling from side to side.
I see that I did not count the cost of my commitments and promises to the Lord, nor seek the wisdom from the Lord, and in time became double minded in my thinking that I could continue in my old patterns and lifestyle, and still walk in a new life of promises to the Lord in my day to day living.
Written with such truth in the book of James 1:8: A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. And in James 1:6 For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
Although my shortcomings prevail, I am grateful for the promises of God. His promises are always true and in true, for He is truth. He is the center Hub, and His spoken Word is Jesus Christ. His spokes and spoken promises will never be broken, change or stretch with time. In Him and because of Him, I will be made whole, and true. His promises will not leave me as I am. Even though the heavens and the earth, my words and my promises will all fade away, His Word and His promises shall not pass away. They remain steadfast, strong and true. I am grateful for His patience with my broken spokes in my wheel of spoken promises and His willingness to torque and adjust my life, to become more and more like Him - balanced and true, enabling me to persevere to the end.
Oh Lord How many promises have I broken to you?
How many times have I disappointed you?
My heart breaks at the thought of it.
Each day I pray and seek to know your promises to me,
holding on tightly but in many times with unbelief - thinking your promise untrue,
yet it is my promises that are untrue to you.
It is I, in whom you should not believe or put your hope in,
yet each day you do.
Each day, with each promise I make to you,
you have hope in trust in me,
even though daily I fail you.
