“Miriam, please keep your voice down. You don’t want people to hear you!”
“Micah, I don’t care who hears. Something has to be done about that young man. He’s keeping company with an awful lot. Tax collectors, thieves… and now… dare I say… prostitutes! I know his mother and I know that she raised him for better than this!”
“Miriam, dear, please try to calm down.”
“I can’t calm down. You dragged me to that house to hear him teach. I admit he was doing a lovely job, but then… I… I just can’t believe … who let THAT woman in the house in the first place!”
“I don’t know, Miriam.”
“Well, it’s a disgrace I tell you. Women like that should not be allowed in polite company. Jesus would have done well to dismiss her, but NO! He welcomed HER! He knew good and well what kind of woman she was and he let her… he let her… he let her… touch him! First she dumped that expensive perfume all over his feet, then she had the audacity to wipe it off with her hair of all things. Why, I’ve never been subjected to such a perverse scene in all my life! What on earth do you think was accomplished by that little display? A waste of time and a waste of good money if you ask me.”
“She seemed repentant, Miriam. Maybe we should give her the benefit of the doubt. Jesus seemed to forgive her. Maybe we should too.”
“It’s not up to Jesus to forgive! He needs to remember his place, Micah. There are rules for a reason. Jesus should remember who he is!”
