I can, however, draw a comparison of beginning school to an encounter I had just this week with a baby dove. I was standing in the parking lot behind the building where I work when a little baby dove flew up and landed on the pavement about five feet from where I was standing.
The little bird immediately caught my attention by coming so near, but then to my amazement he began to walk towards me. By now my mouth was gapping open in astonishment as he came within inches of my feet, circling me with no show of fear at all.
This is what I remember about the first day of school...wide-eyed amazement at the possibilities before me...new friends...new experiences...new things to investigate and learn.
I can now recall, with the aid of a little baby dove, that as a first grader I still trusted people.
