wonder-working power
In the precious Blood of the Lamb…
Oh the memories that rush into my heart when I hear the words to that old hymn written by Lewis E. Jones! My mind is flooded with images of the wispy blonde hairs of a preschooler dancing along in rhythm as I tittered on the edge of wooden-slated pews of my grandparent’s tiny country church, swaying between them, as they held the old frayed maroon colored Methodist Hymnal trying to appear every bit as grown-up as they were. My mouth opened as wide as a baby bird’s belting out the melodies as loudly as I could. I only had one volume – loud. I only had one tone – powerful!
I knew them all by rote. They were deeply embedded in my soul.
Those hymns bring a sense of belonging and identification to my spiritual life. They are landmarks along my pilgrimage. Songs like Blessed Assurance, Be Thou My Vision, It Is Well With My Soul, and Rock of Ages all touch my soul and soothe me in times of great despair.
Memories of booming out Victory in Jesus, Bringing in the Sheaves, How Firm a Foundation and A Mighty Fortress, at the top of my lungs during a revival or college sing-a-long, always assure me of the coming victory over this world. They are precious to me.
They do not have the same effect on my children. They may think they are okay, but they are not the songs of their pilgrimage. Neither will Delirious, Hillsongs, Passion, Third Day, Rita Springer or Casting Crowns have the same affect on their grandchildren.
There are only a few songs that cross all generational gaps. Amazing Grace is the most familiar.
As is my habit while traveling, I tuned my car radio to Christian contemporary and hummed along. It was midday, so the music ceased and the assorted variety of talk shows began. One speaker’s comments peeked my interest. He talked about the 12 signals of this current generation. Regarding their tastes in music he said…
…the music that they listen to is a reflection of what is going on in their hearts.
Wow! What a profound statement. I began thinking about the music I was listening to. Was that what was going on in my soul? I lost myself in the contemplation as I headed down the interstate.
I have started noticing what music people are listening to. Now I find myself wondering what is going on in there souls?
Are they happy?
Angry…
Lonely…
Afraid…
Bitter …
Filled with gratitude…
In love…
Wrapped in worship…
Or Lost…
It has opened several poignant conversations.
What I have also noticed is the complete absence of music. When there is no melody in the heart. To be empty of music! To have no song in your heart!
Every army going to war, every football team, every club and school has a song. It is the rallying point that draws everyone together. Songs breathe life, courage, hope and unity into a group of people.
Music has tremendous power!
Oh how we need the Power of the Lamb’s precious Blood, flowing through our music! Whether it is from a dusty hymnal of the 1800’s, a contemporary worship song, blue grass, country gospel or hammering rock., whatever the flavor, we need His music in our hearts sending the powerful message of His unending love, care, provision, devotion and victory to our souls building hope and confidence.
So what’s the song in your heart?
