At the park, Marie, the oldest, quickly scampered to the top of one huge rock. She is athletic and strong, and climbing comes easy to her. Her younger sister, LeeAnn, is wiry and quick, so her climb was not difficult, either. However, the youngest of the trio, Elizabeth, had a harder time maneuvering the steep rock, so I helped her by steadying her from behind. Slowly, she worked her way up the rock, using both hands and feet, determined to finish. When she reached the top, she stood for a moment on the flat top of the rock. Then she did something competely unexpected: she threw her arms high into the air, and yelled loudly, “Praise the Lord!” (Actually, in her 3 year-old language it sounded more like, “Pwaise da Lawd!”)
Elizabeth’s happy outburst of praise made us all laugh out loud and applaud heartily. And it was one of those moments when you felt God was laughing, too.
Oh, little Elizabeth, how I wish I were more like you. You are spontaneous and exuberant, recognizing God’s help in your accomplishments and thanking Him unashamedly. How you teach me to praise and worship without reservation, without self-consciousness! You remind me to praise the Lord for all things and at all times. You demonstrate that praising God is a high form of worship. Thank you, Elizabeth, for teaching me so much in your sweet, innocent way.
