It is no wonder that Jesus used this as a metaphor for his power in our lives. When he met the woman of Samaria at Jacob’s well, he opened the conversation with water; “Give me to drink.” From this springboard, he proceeded to offer her his living water, which has the power to eliminate thirst permanently and replenish itself eternally. Having tasted, the woman of Samaria became an instant missionary.
In St. John 7:37-38, Jesus, in reference to the Holy Spirit said, “If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” This indicates that first there has to be a need, a thirst. Next there has to be action, drinking, and then there is the outflow.
The belly is where digestion takes place. The blood picks up the nutrients that we ingest and takes them to the other parts of the body, while the refuse continues through the intestines on its way out. The inference is that once we drink of the living water, the nutrients of the fruit of the Spirit will flow from us to nourish the rest of the world. This is what gives us the ability to be light and the salt of the earth. Can you imagine what powerful bellies we can have if we only stop and drink?
