Glenn A. Hascall
Sam was tougher, wiser
bigger, better, brighter
Sam was gifted, cherished
Hallowed and much kinder
He could ride the range
While reading works of Frost
He needed no directions
'Cause Sam never once got lost
When it came to business
None could measure up
Sam had all the answers
An aged bulldog among pups
His advice? It was unsullied
His knowledge? Knew no bounds
He dispensed it freely and often
Like when a preacher, pulpit pounds
Now I know what you’re a’thinking
And you’re right to play the doubter
But you best take his word for it
‘Cause no one likes ‘Sam, the pouter’
He’d tell you to your face
Hire folks to tout his feats
He was believing his own press
The head swelling’s near complete
His stories - chock full of color
There’s not much he hasn’t done
No matter your story, he’ll out do ya’
And he’s a quick draw with a gun
His horse has the spirit of the west
Leading where ere the wind may blow
The rich history of the ‘legend of Sam’
Has the effect of gravity on snow
It gets bigger by the minute
Pickin’ up steam as it rolls along
Only Sam can’t seem to see the crash
Bring it up - he’ll say you’re wrong
Then one day ‘ole Sam, he slipped away
To that dude ranch in the sky
He marveled at the pearly gates
And the heavenly things he spied
Then he chanced upon ‘ole St. Pete
A gawking at a book
“I’m probably in there,” says smilin’ Sam
Just let me take a look
It seemed Old Pete had little choice
For Sam grabbed the book and read
“A self made man is tough to beat,
And Self-Important-Sam is dead.
“You chose a trail designed for friends
To make your one man stand
When all the while I was reaching
To take your stubborn hand
“You clung to human arrogance,
You fought against My reigns
When I think of all your chances
I’m left with grief and pain
“You were certain you needed no one,
Soon, no one needed you to boot
You just wouldn’t stop to listen
Now it’s time for Sam to scoot.”
A rooster crowed, Sam rubbed his face
“A dream? Nothing more? Steady, Sam.”
And a shaken pride caused him to say
“I’m not half the man I think I am.”
Politics, religion and love
Strong opinions with appeasement
Amidst all the loud debate
Sam’s declaration found agreement.
