Topic: SCUTTLEBUTT (rumor or gossip) (10/03/19)
She heard the sibilant whispers
Following her as she walked alone
To her locker in the crowded hall.
Though the words were not loud enough
For her to understand,
She was aware by their pointing,
They were making fun of her faded clothes.
That made her smile just a little
As she saw them standing proudly
In their designer jeans with holes in the knees.
After putting her books away,
She closed the locker door
And made her way to the cafeteria,
Where she overheard little groups
Who did not every try to pretend
That they weren’t talking about her.
She found an empty table,
Sat down and opened a paper bag
To take out a sandwich and apple,
Then bowed her head for a silent blessing.
She recognized some students nearby
From her English class,
Where someone had started a rumor
That she was retarded.
They had assumed she lacked intelligence
Because she didn’t wear new clothes,
And she hadn’t spoken in class.
But what they did not know
Was for the returned test today,
About which so many were complaining
Of their very low grades,,
She’d made a perfect score,
And that the creative writing assignment,
Which they’d moaned was too hard,
Was to her a delightful opportunity.
Though it was not pleasant
To have others look down on her,
And speak unkindly about her,
She had peace in the knowledge
She was very much loved
By God and by her family,
And wise for her years, she knew
The rumor would soon fade,
And she would not be very long
Without some new friends.

Oh high school is so hard and with social media it seems to get harder and harder. You did an awesome job of developing this character. I could see her walk through her day. You nailed the topic too.

I'll bet everyone who reads this is able to identify with parts of it. Christians are held to a higher standard and one slip-up can make us the object of verbal abuse or even estrangement. Thank God for the confidence He gives us through our faith in Christ. A very well written entry indeed!
