Of little consequence
Till hateful words turned embers to
A firestorm immense.
They weren’t really all that bad,
The eggs that were too done,
But when he made a small complaint,
She couldn’t hold her tongue.
She let fly all that bothered her,
From socks left on the floor
To globs of toothpaste on the sink.
She ranted still some more.
He hadn’t helped around the house,
And then she sent a zinger.
She said his mother had been mean
To find fault with her dinner.
That last remark put him in flames.
For sure, she’d now stepped in it.
He’d not hear words against his mom
For one more single minute.
He mentioned her deficiencies,
Then catalogued them all.
She realized he told the truth,
And she began to bawl.
At last, they both regretted that
They’d been so critical.
They’d failed to act like Christians should,
Let God’s love conquer all.
They each said they were sorry for
The words they’d thrown about.
As for that fire that burned so hot,
Forgiveness put it out.
