Night has packed up
His purple spread,
Sparked with stars,
And slowly stolen away,
Following the tracks
Of disappearing Moon,
To go into hiding
Until it’s time to return.
Day arrives in company with
Her golden companion, Sun,
Who climbs gradually
Higher and higher
On an invisible ladder
To perch at the tiptop
Of endless sky
And send out
Glittering rays.
Day wears a skirt
Of many shades of blue,
Adorned at first, with swirls
Of lavender, pink, and gray,
Painted by Sun
And stretching out
Farther than eye can see.
Fog attempts to keep hidden
The glories of broken Morn
But will be eventually overcome
By the magnificence
Of the giant gilded ball
And will lift lazily
From lakes and ponds.
Some of Morning’s first heralds
Are carolers of birds,
Tweeting and twittering
The news that Night has left
And singing their praises
For Day’s arrival,
A precious gift from God.
