When I was eight or so
And started waiting right away
To see if they would grow.
I went to check them ev’ry day
To seek a greening sprout,
But not a single leaf was seen,
Not even weeds about.
I’d not prepared the soil for them
Nor planned for partial shade,
And as for watering the seeds,
No single thought was made.
That didn’t stop my waiting though.
I wasn’t realistic.
I thought the rain and sun enough
For feeling optimistic.
By summer’s end I’d given up.
My wait had been in vain.
From trying to grow flower seeds,
In future I’d refrain.
Though flower growing’s not my skill,
I learned from my mistake
That anything worth waiting for
I need to cultivate.
So gathered I then seeds of friendship,
And garden I prepared
With lots of smiles and kindly words
That from my heart I shared.
I watered them with prayerful tears
And found to my delight
That loving them like Jesus does
Would help to make them bright.
I settled back, prepared to wait
And see if seeds would thrive.
Some started growing right away,
And still they are alive.
