From your side to try to hide
The pile, hoped I'd just forget?
The carpet only built it higher, fueled the fire.
Whether waltz or jitterbug is played,
Our feet will never meet,
The boundary's made.
Year by year, misunderstandings mount, piled high with slights perceived, words ill-conceived.
Accompanying another who would vault from side to side,
Suddenly I find your hand in mine,
Seeking just to stroll along this great divide.
No baggage plucked to try to deconstruct.
I withdraw my hand, extending in return
A mirror, but you do not like what you see there,
The gesture spurn.
In haste, you fill the last remaining space.
We glare grimly at each other from across the room,
Then paste our smiles for a while
As other faces loom.
The invisible barrier, nonetheless, towers between us.
Now, those who love us both have stepped aside,
And cease to broker peace.
So long they tried.
Life is short, but sealed it stands.
Living life, one day, I hear a crack,
And pause to seek the cause
Taken aback.
You've worked a window in the wall.
I ponder on the purpose you intend,
To just look "good," do what you "should,"
Or truly be a friend?
I fold my query in to a paper plane, loft it through the window, ... and wait ... again...
