“Oh, really? So what fun things do you do? Let me guess – you get to walk the dog.” Martine pushed herself away from the desk with a twisting motion that made her chair spin.
“Sure, of course I do. Rover is a great dog.” Why was the color of that sock just a little off? Eric wondered.
“Rover. As if.” Martine gave herself another spin.
“As if what?” He switched his feet studying the other sock from this angle.
“As if he ever gets to rove. His name is an insult to him. His life is as scheduled and boring as yours.” She stomped her foot down and abruptly stopped the spinning.
“What are you talking about? He is a very happy dog. And don’t break that chair,” Eric warned.
“I don’t think you know happy. I think you’re stuffy and completely unadventurous and a whole lot like your Dad. Could there ever be anyone more dull than either of you?” Martine knew she was pushing buttons but she didn’t care, she was sooo bored. Why did her mom and his dad(of all people) have to be involved in this way-too-long meeting? She stood up and then climbed into the chair crouching down part way and giving another push.”
“You’re a real weirdo, you know that? Who does this kind of stuff? If you stand up and fall off that chair I’m not gonna help you, I’ll just laugh.
“No you won’t. You’ll be the one to scream. But don’t worry.” She gave a big push. “That’s not gonna happen. It’s too boring here for anything like that to happen.” Martine half stood on the moving chair her arms out for balance.
“You think you can get to me with all your weirdness. Well, it’s not going to work. I don’t care what happens to you.” Eric turned his attention back to his socks.
Then he was caught off balance when the sofa cushion he was sitting on caved deeply in and Martine smacked right into him after leaping from the chair. The chair meanwhile, careened back across the room and crashed into the wall.
“What’s going on out there?” Eric’s dad boomed from the door to the inner office.
“Nothing, Dad, sorry,” Eric answered quickly.
Martine looked up and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “Eric wanted to push me around the room on the chair. I told him I didn’t want to and the chair just kind of got away from him.” She smiled sweetly at Eric’s dad and folded her hands in her lap.
Eric’s dad furrowed his brow. “Eric, please – this is not like you. We just need a few minutes. Try to act responsibly.” He back stepped into the office closing the door again.
“Hah! That was fun!” Martine laughed. “Now what should we do?”
“You’re going to be a real problem. I can’t believe you did that. What’s wrong with you?” Eric looked at Martine angrily.
“Oh come on, admit it. You’ve been bored too. All you do is sit there and stare at your socks. What’s the deal with them? They’re still a match even if one is inside out. You would never wear unmatched socks.” Martine accused.
“You could see that and you didn’t tell me?” Eric asked, his eyes big.
“Tell you that your socks match? Ho hum. And you said I was weird.” Martine brought a hand to her yawning mouth.
“No, no – you didn’t tell me that one is inside out. I knew something wasn’t right. How do you think it got that way?”
“Are you kidding me? You never had an inside out sock before? Mom and I always fold them together the way they come out of the dryer, who wouldn’t?” Martine shook her head. “Will somebody please tell me what I’m supposed to do with you?”
No sooner had she asked the question then the inner door opened and a bouquet of roses flew into Eric’s hands as he tried to block the oncoming hit. Martine’s beaming mom stepped into the room on the arm of Eric’s Dad.
Pastor Mark stepped out of his office, presenting the couple as he said to Eric and Martine. “Congratulations, what an exciting afternoon, you’ve just become brother and sister!”
