These days, you can’t watch TV without hearing news about royalty. If it’s not that, it’s reality TV. I can’t figure out why so many care about why some princess went to a party or why people would line up to get married in six weeks. But that’s what people today seem fascinated by - and a writer’s gotta eat, so here’s a story that combines both:

Once there was a King called Wallace the Wonderful. His wife, Katherine the Kind, died in childbirth. King Wallace vowed he’d never remarry, and life went on. He was a good King, and his subjects loved him.

But King Wallace had a problem. His daughter, Victoria the Valiant (secretly referred to as Victoria the Vain) was a spoiled brat. Hey: not all princesses are perfect, you know. She spent hours doing her make-up. She treated everyone as though they lived solely to serve her every whim. Her hair salon bills alone were about half the national debt.


When Victoria was turned 29, Wallace began to worry. She showed no indication of getting married, and Wallace wanted grandchildren before it was too late.

So he told her she had a year to get married. She resisted, but she knew who paid all those salon bills. Wallace invited every eligible royal to court her. When they all turned her down, he asked the men of his Kingdom to vie for her hand. Many of them wanted to be a prince, but a date or two with Victoria soured them on that idea.

By the Friday before Victoria’ 30th birthday, there were only three eligible men left in the Kingdom. Wallace told Victoria those men would meet with her that weekend. He said she’d have to choose one and marry him Monday night. She pouted, but Wallace folded his arms with kingly firmness, and Victoria relented.

As for how to choose, Wallace knew if Victoria set the standards, she’d make the choice impossible. So he challenged the men to do four things: to prove their strength; prove their bravery; tell Vanessa a story, and give her an unique gift.

The first man was Pierre, the Palace Chef. He showed his bravery by slicing the deadly fugu fish - and then eating it himself. Pierre showed his strength by karate-chopping through a pile of boards. Pierre told Victoria a lovely fairy tale in his charming Gallic accent. Lastly, Pierre made a cake with Victoria’s face on its icing. When he left, Victoria said, “he’s OK, I guess.” King Wallace smiled.

Next was Manolo, the captain of the King’s guard. Manolo’s muscles were much in evidence. He demonstrated his strength by lifting the King over his head, complete with his throne. Manolo’s bravery was demonstrated by inviting Pierre to spar with him. Manolo’s story was an interminable account of battle. His gift was a framed photo of himself. When he left, Vanessa reported, “he’s pretty cute, Dad.” Wallace’s hopes were high.

King Wallace wasn’t as hopeful about the third choice, because the only other single man in the Kingdom was Lester the Jester.

Victoria rolled her eyes. But Lester was uncharacteristically serious. Lester began, “My Princess, I’m honored to tell you my feelings, for I’ve loved you these many years.The joy of the Lord is my strength. My story is of Jesus. He died to heal your sins and provide a Way to heaven. His love is the most wonderful thing in this world. My gift to you is the truth: you are vain, arrogant and selfish. But Jesus will heal you if you ask Him.”

Victoria gasped at Lester’s arrogance and asked the King, “Is this a joke? Did you really think I’d marry this bozo? He hasn’t even demonstrate his bravery.”

But Lester boldly continued, “I’m not finished, Princess. My bravery is coming to you just as I am, and loving and accepting you as you are. I’m not a handsome soldier or a talented chef. But I bring you love and the truth, and pray you will accept both.” He left, and Victoria scowled, but told Wallace she’d think about it.

Victoria thought long and hard. She’d known, deep down, of her vanity and selfishness. Lester’s speech had strangely stirred her soul. She wondered if his words could possibly be true, and whether this Jesus was real... Maybe….

But... after all was said and done, she married the cute one.

Hey: I told you princesses aren’t all perfect.

Isn't that the truth. I love fairytale stories even when they don't turn out the way we like. Very entertaining.

The story had an important lesson. I would leave out the first paragraph; it did little to advance the story (at least for me).

I liked how you took a common childhood tail and twisted it. The story was full of emotions - from the pain of death to the expected joy of having a grandchild. (As well as the smile of each reader.)

So keep doing what you know how to do the best you can because of the gift given to you.
