“Help!” she cried. “A big, beastly bug is going to bite me!”
Mom ran in, swinging a broom. “I’ll catch it!” And she swept and swatted—mostly air, dust, and some hidden chocolate chip cookie crumbs—but no bug. “I think it’s gone,” she told Mandy as she tucked her in bed.
“Are you sure?” Mandy asked as she squeezed Freddy bear tighter than usual.
“As sure as maple syrup is sweet.”
But before Mandy closed her eyes, she heard IT again. It whooshed past her eyes, a blur glowing in the moonlight.
“Help!” she cried. “A horrible horned bug is going to eat me!” Mandy hid in her covers.
Dad rushed in, lugging a roaring leaf blower. “I’ll blow it out of your room.”
He opened the window, turned the blower on high and...
vroommm...
Everything blew out. Her dolls, her socks, her blanket, her books. Even Mandy had to hold onto the bedpost or she would’ve been blown out the window.
“Whoa. Maybe high was too high. Well, at least that bug is gone.”
“Are you super sure?”
“As sure as blueberries are blue.” And he kissed her forehead.
But before Mandy closed her eyes, she heard IT again.
“Help!” she cried. “A ghoulish gilled bug is about to swallow me!”
Mandy’s older brother, Jake, bounded in, strumming his electric guitar.
“Watch me blast him out.” Shereee, sheeee, zzzeeeeeeeeeee ahaah ooohh weeeeee...
Mandy covered her ears until Jake ended his solo. “I think you scared IT into hiding forever.”
“Alright. Sleep tight. Don’t let the bed bugs bite.”
Mandy looked at Jake—a “you’ve got to be kidding” look. “Are you going to tell me you’re sure it’s gone?”
“Yah, it’s gone...sure as I’m a rock star.”
But just before Mandy closed her eyes, she heard IT again. “Help!” she cried. “A nasty needlebug is attacking me!”
Little Jo, her baby brother, toddled in. His eyes circled the room, landing on the lamp, then the curtains, then his arm. “Wook. A wittle bug!”
Ladybug trembled in the mini-giant’s hands. “Please don’t kill me. I’m a helpful bug. I eat the aphids that gobble up your tomato plants. And I never bite.”
Mandy held her arm out for ladybug. “You’re the terrible monstrous bug who’s been scaring me all night?”
“How do you think I feel? I’ve been chased and swatted, blown and screeched at by giants all night. My antennae are still shaking.”
Mandy laid ladybug on her doll’s bed. “Here you go.” She turned out the light and they said, “Goodnight.”
And the big beastly, horrible horned, ghoulish gilled, nasty needle bug yawned.
“Buzzzzzzz. Goodnight.”
