A hint of dinner in the water draws me deeper. The smell rolls across my nostrils and tickles the fine receptors, telling me dinner is at fin. I know it’s here.
Ah! Yes! Hmmmm…. It rolls and slims down my gullet and gives me strength for my long journey. There’s nothing like a belly full of jellies.
I rejoin the silent swim as the current both steers and propels me toward the place I’m designed to go. It’s as if I’m being drawn along, even as every cell in my body yearns to keep moving…ever moving.
Forward. I will get there. Tiny molecules of memory swim through me and wrap into all senses. I know the way.
My swollen shell, unnoticed by the random swimmers-by, carries it all. It’s the reason for this impending season. It is a delivery that I was born to make. Postage paid. Deal done.
As night turns to bright, I see a small bump of land rise from the horizon as I rise above the surface for air. I’m almost there….
Slam! I’m grabbed from below, my fin crunched in the massive jaws of the Great Fish. He pulls me and twists, and tries to drag me to the depths. Searing pain rips through me.
Just as quickly, he lets go. I’m not as tasty - or as easy – as others he’s had.
Bloodied but able, I push on even as I'm carried by the sea.
The beach rises up in front of me. I’m here again after all these years. Everything looks smaller somehow. After thousands of miles of fluid motion, the first heaves up onto the gritty sand feel heavy and the terrain foreign.
I pause and rest. Falling into the deep sleep of the long traveler. After lazing in the afternoon sun my eyes pop open and the first thing I see is the mound of my mission.
Feeling fresh and renewed, I trudge up the hill - one fin, one slide, and pull at a time. Suddenly urgency breaks over me and I speed up. Time feels pressing. My backside agrees. I find just the right spot. The only spot that will do.
Just as the light dips over the vast sea and night courses over the landscape, I begin to dig with a strength I didn’t know I had. Dig and dig. Then, at last, it is perfect and I make my deposit of glowing, shiny balls of life; I’ve come full circle.
And suddenly, it’s as if the years melt away and I remember digging my way out of this same top-heavy cavern. I was born to do this.
I was born to do this and even the most back breaking efforts were like floating on the wind in the light of the plan. Every cell, from my skin to my shell, were wired to swim and eat and finish the mission while floating on the ripples of the Current.
Easy peasy.
