Was Wednesday, a spring chicken.
Pan frying was her passion—
Kept her chicken heart a-tickin’.
She whipped around on banty legs,
Then, in her nest laid scrambled eggs.
A south breeze warmed a chicken coop—
‘Twas Wednesday’s diner venue.
A gourmet omelet was it—
Lone item on the menu.
Anticipation spurred a thrill
When Wednesday fired up the grill.
An arctic wind conveyed the flu
And seized the eatery.
It struck the young proprietress;
Conferred on her a malady.
The flu deprived her of her might.
Poor Wednesday lost her appetite.
While chilling gusts seeped through the chinks,
The broody patrons anguished.
Their omelet diner was imperiled,
The owner’s fettle languished.
That day at Wednesday’s eatery,
The squawks were without jubilee—
For dandruff flakes now plagued her comb.
Her daunting diagnosis?
As plumes migrated from her head,
Left baldness—phalacrosis.
Once hearty squawks, reduced to squeaks,
And fungus crusted on her beak.
The ailing chicken’s fever raged,
Her gizzard’s contents roiled.
She ceased a-laying scrambled eggs—
Now only laid hard-boiled.
Her brow displayed a fevered sheen
While she perused a magazine.—
There featured in Good Nestkeeping,
A tonic smoothie recipe.
“Combine anchos with milkweed pods
Infused with pomegranate tea.
Incorporate two sprigs of dill
Then, pressure-cook the spicy swill.”
On Monday, Wednesday convalesced.
By Tuesday, she was snackin’.
On Thursday, she laid scrambled eggs—
Her omelets, once more, crackin’.
Now every Friday, Wednesday’s grill
Serves Therapeutic Herbal Swill.
