Through stained glass windows,
Casting hues of blue on the white crepe ribbon,
Draped across the pews;
The cross at the center
And the hope for their love to grow.
He tapped his feet
In joyful anticipation
Of his bride,
His high school sweetheart;
The smile that swept his soul;
The eyes that cheered his desires;
The heart that strengthened his faith.
Murmurs softened as piano chords
Filled the air with a Midsummer Night’s Dream
And she stepped onto the satin runner,
Leading her to him;
The distance between them
Shrinking at every fourth beat;
In her white chiffon,
She glided as an angel,
Sprinkling her scent of wildflowers,
Her beauty hidden under the veil.
They promised to love
To cherish
From this day forward.
But as he lifted the veil,
His bride vanished.
A treasure chest draped in
White frills stood in her place.
Compelled to open the lid,
As a Pandora Box,
He found what he loved—
His TV and computer,
His sports and hobbies,
Wrapped in time.
Hours of work
And dollars were
Layered in the mess and moldy scent;
Sadness swallowed the joy;
This wasn’t the bride he wanted…
When he reached the bottom of the box,
At the moment he was to give up
All hope—
Something sparkled, and sparked
A new light within him.
He pushed the things aside,
And pulled out a ring,
A perfect golden circle…
And he remembered his love,
A gift greater than any treasure.
He held her warm hand
And they proceeded down the aisle
Of their life together.
