The king did what any wise man would do when fear strikes his heart, he fell on his face before God and pleaded for help to fight the coming battle. At his summons, the whole nation of Judah gathered to join him in fasting and seeking the face of the Lord.
Jehoshaphat stood before his people and prayed, "O God, will you not judge this army that dares to attack your people? We have no power to defeat them but you have all strength and might. If you will be our defense, they cannot destroy us. We will humbly wait and watch for your deliverance."
While they were waiting for an answer from God, Jahaziel, a Levite, spoke by the Spirit of the Lord, "The Lord has heard our prayer, we need not be afraid for this is his battle and he will fight it for us." All the people fell to the ground and worshiped God, then stood up to praise him, shouting with joy.
They went out to meet their enemy early the next morning. Jehoshaphat chose a very unusual way to organize his troops. Rather than send the best warriors in the front, he placed his singers first.
As they approached the camp of the men of Ammon, Moab and Mount Seir, the singers cried out, "Give thanks to the Lord, for his steadfast love endures forever."
Confusion descended over the enemy encampment at the sound of their singing. The men of Ammon and Moab attacked those from Mount Seir, then turned on their own men and entirely obliterated each other.
The men of Judah arrived to find their enemies dead. It took them three days to raid the encampment for valuables, finding far more than they could carry home. The fourth day, they gathered to worship God for his miraculous delivery and then returned to Jerusalem with great joy.
Their singing didn't cause the confusion. The God of Israel prompted the panic. He dwells in the praises of his people and as they sang, he went before them and destroyed their enemy.
When you pray for God to defend you, don't neglect your most powerful weapon - praise.
But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.
