Elinda's wandering mind drowned out the hushed conversation in the room, as bits of the past filtered into the present. Long-ago places, long-ago people. Through the haze, a firm calling reached her, strengthening her to complete one more necessary task.
“Katherine?” Elinda whispered to her eldest daughter.
The young woman leaned forward from the chair she sat in. “Yeah, Mom?”
“I have to visit your father tonight. I promised him.”
Katherine's smile vanished, replaced by a tepid raincloud of concern. Elinda dearly wished her family wouldn't worry so much. She'd certainly raised them better than that.
“What do you mean?” Katherine asked.
“He and I always go to and visit the Irish relatives in the summer. Remember? You and your brothers came with us last time.” She laughed. “Oh, what fun that was! Now, I promised your father I'd meet him at the airport. I have to get moving or we'll miss the plane.”
Katherine shook her head. “Mom, it's been nine years since you went to Ireland.”
“Don't be silly, sweetheart. We were there just a few months ago, and we travel back often.”
Tears invaded Katherine's eyes. “Dad has been gone for nine years . . .”
Elinda glanced up at the ceiling, her fragile body resisting the white bed she laid in. But when her eyes rested on the pearly tiles above, she saw the sky. So blue and calm, just like his eyes. Tiny clouds of perfect ivory speckled the summery aqua. Elinda loosed a deep breath. Finally, she was free!
A comforting hand touched hers and Elinda lowered her gaze to earth again, all thoughts of restraining doctors and the childrens' needless concerns scattered and forgotten.
“Issac,” she breathed as she held her husband's hand. “I was so afraid I'd be late. The children didn't want me to come. Are we going to get there on time?”
He nodded, a perfect, loving smile dawning on his face as brightly as the sun itself.
“Good. This is going to be our greatest journey yet!”
“Are you ready?” he asked.
Elinda nodded excitedly. “I've been ready for this for a long time.”
They smiled together and walked forward hand-in-hand. The brilliance of the sunlit land was magnetizing. Elinda was sure she hadn't been here before.
“Where are we, Issac?”
“We're on our way,” he replied softly.
“To where?”
“To a very special place.”
All at once, Elinda understood, and her joy amplified a thousand times. This truly was going to be their greatest journey of all. And she was ready!
The entrancing, glorious light enveloped the two, and the blazing glow heightened to unfathomable measures. Elinda knew it, and it sent an unequaled joy deep into her spirit. She was going home.
