Descends unto the ground.
Surprise! Dismay! The future must
Forever be earthbound!
To be down here, instead of there -
The difference is profound!
How could this come upon him?
There must be some mistake!
'till now, no shadow of a doubt,
No questions that confound.
He simply joined with all the rest
To form his maple’s crown.
One lowly leaf could be a part,
With others gathered round.
Just one among so many.
Each one part of the whole.
But here, what purpose can there be
For him - a leaf - cast down,
Alone, unknown, bereft, confused -
With this bizarre surround?
His world, his life, his hope, all gone,
Eternally unsound.
The dirt, the weeds, the thorns.
Unpleasant, tedious.
Discouragement arrives, becomes
Despondency, unbound.
From heart of hope to hopelessness -
No good will e’er be found,
From lofty heights of maple bough,
To this bleak realm, aground.
Vain, inept futility
Holds sway in stubborn reign.
Immersed in chronic misery,
Stealth-wrapped hope, soon, rebounds,
Goes easily unnoticed now,
Ensconsed in dark background.
A flicker, a flash, an ember,
Could spark a turnaround.
Buried by discouragement,
Veiled by morose despair.
A single leaf, without his buds,
Could never form a mound.
A canopy of one leaf would
Be too sparse to astound.
Still, single leafs have value, and
Their traits just might confound.
Hordes engulf, encompass all.
Solo could be good, too.
Should breezes blow and gently stir
Our leaf, and not back down,
Once more he’ll find his hold released,
But now he tumbles ‘round,
’til finally, he rests in place,
A place that’s sure and sound.
Reeling, skidding, toppling,
Skittering and bouncing.
His maple tree now far away,
He rests in the foreground,
Against a rock, on twigs and stones,
Where passers-by abound,
Exposed, where everyone may see
Our leaf’s appeal, newfound.
Such a lovely picture there.
A lowly leaf display.
Of delicate, etched tracery
Of veins, some will expound.
Of sculpted edge that charms the world,
Our leaf has been endowed.
With intense shade of scarlet hue,
Profuse praise will resound.
Beauty and joy to behold.
Creations lavish gift.
So hearts and souls all benefit
From single leafs, somehow.
We’re moved to cherish, and be glad,
And do them both year-round.
Our lowly leaf achieves the state
Of Masterpiece, renown.
