Last night I dreamed a dream, and it took me into lands where the grass grows green, where spring dawns as gloriously as a summer sunrise, and where the mist and shadows have faded into myth.
There, standing on a hill, I saw a man before me, clothed in garments of purest white. I suddenly saw my blackness as it came forth in ugly contrast to the land I saw around me. In a desperate attempt to hide, I scrambled to the shelter of the trees. But as soon as I knelt down, I knew the man could see me still.
“Come forth, daughter of the King.” His words enveloped me in a drenching peace. My heart instantly craved their truth. And in that moment, as I stepped slowly from my hiding place, the darkness I had taken into the dream was shed as a child sheds their coat in spring.
I looked up from the ground and in my sight I saw His arms spread wide for me. I fell into His hands as He carried me from the hill into a valley. In that valley were flowers for which I had no name. They danced all around us like bees around the honey tree. It was as if I had lost my very own will to move, for I just rested there in His arms, wrapped in love, as a babe is wrapped in her mother's arms.
We came to a stop at the edge of the valley.
“Look, and tell Me what you see,” He said as He set me to my feet again.
So I looked. Before us there was a tree, beside a river, much resembling a young maple, but this tree was bearing fruit. As I reached out my hand to touch this new wonder, I saw that the tree was producing many different fruits. Half was just now in its blossoming stage, while the other half was giving food.
The rose-colored blossoms fell over me, washing me clean. The dusty pink blossoms fell at my feet, and the brightest of them all, the blue, took the form of birds above my head.
I walked round and round, trying to understand how one tree could yield so much fruit at one time. When I reached the front again, I asked the man, “How is it that this tree is bearing like this?”
He took my hand in His, and replied, “My daughter, as a tree is planted by the streams of living waters, so you are now planted in Me, and in My kingdom. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail*.”
I looked back at the tree and its blend of abundance. In this paradise, I had found peace. But more than that, I had found a tangible forgiveness, a renewal, that had always before seemed like a mystical dream. Perhaps it was real after all.
The wind brushed over me and I found myself once again carried to the hilltop in the arms of my Father. In the fading sunlight and caressing breeze, I awoke from my dream.
“. . . down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.” Revelation 22:2
