Asks the father,
As dusk settles over the land,
And the little ones,
Grubby from sandbox
And mud pies,
Tumble into the house
For bedtime stories and prayers.
“Is the fold all in?”
Asks the father,
As the children,
Tired from playing games
With neighborhood friends,
Tramp reluctantly into the house
For a quiet hour of homework
Before going to bed.
Is the fold all in?
Asks the father,
As the teen-agers,
Busy with their activities
Of school and church,
Straggle in to meet
Their nightly curfew.
“Is the fold all in?”
Asks the father,
As the family,
All of his children
With their own growing families,
Crowd around the table
For a festive holiday dinner.
All through the years,
And at every stage of family life,
The father prays,
“Lord, hold my fold inside Your hands,
Free from danger and harm
And from the wiles of the evil one.
May they know Your grace
And share Your love with others
Until the nighttime comes,
And You gather us all in Your fold.”
