that keep hidden wonders from our eyes,
Beyond the shops that hawk their souvenirs,
plastic globes and tasseled pillows,
and postcards for half-memories
when the wonders begin to fade,
After the vendors of sweetened treats
that seem so out-of-place,
ice cream cones and Coca-Cola,
clouds and clouds of cotton candy
in melted pinks and sticky blues,
And in the waiting in the line that creeps along so slow,
as piped-in music of other worlds
helps pass this aching time,
And in the wiping away the sweat that the heat has brought to bear,
you find some hope that sometime soon,
you will finally make it to the end.
After miles and miles and hours and hours,
you reach that Holy Grail …
And when you do, you always ask,
"Why did this venture fail?"
Yet each year, we buy our maps
and plan our journey there,
To see a wonder we've ne'er seen before,
on the road to Everywhere.
