I snapped many photos along the way
With the camera of my eyes.
We left tall silos of Iowa
And flat green worlds of prairie,
Where cows sprawled in the sunshine,
Then followed the Missouri River
To a land beyond,
Where whorls and dips shimmered
With wind-tossed grasses and wheat.
Badlands sprang upon us
With a rugged display of rocks.
Sand castles and petrified teepee pyramids
Wore necklaces of cacti and wild flowers.
Panoramic views abounded of embroidered stone,
Giant carvings of a master-craftsman artist.
Beneath a flying canopy of multi-colored birds,
A wild turkey buzzard perched
Atop a tall mountain of stone.
He swooped around the rim,
His shadow flickering in the fading light.
The morning sun wakened us to magnificence.
A filigree of golden thread crested the Black Hills,
Followed by a golden ball of brilliance.
We entered Needles Highway
On a winding, looping road
To find single-car tunnels cut through mountainsides.
Adult dark buffalo with their soft brown babies
Crossed the road in front of us.
A colony of prairie dogs sat on hind legs
And played in and out of their burrows.
Two old pack mules stuck their heads
In our car window to beg for food.
At Boot Hill, gravestones of Wild Bill Hickok
And Calamity Jane were not so memorable to me
As one tiny headstone, engraved “Our Boy.”
All these pictures, once seen, will remain with me
As long as my eyes’ memory is alive.

...cows sprawled in the sunshine." Each description from your eye's camera lavishly paints these travel images for the reader. Your final image, the hauntingly sad "Our boy" picture, will stay with me too. I wish I was with you on this trip.
