I did not know that the dark night
Would any different be
To numerous other shepherd-nights
Outside the walled city.
But when Heaven broke through darkened skies
And hills blazened with light
And myriad hosts of angels came
In glorious splendour bright,
I heard the sweetest ever song,
The sweetest message too -
The Saviour of the World was born,
He’d come, for me, for you.
I did not know He so loved me,
I so sinful and poor,
But when I heard the angels sing
I knew, I knew, for sure.
I did not know that I could feel
Such empty black despair –
I saw Him bleeding on the tree
In anguish, dying there.
Forlorn and inconsolable
I headed t’ward the tomb
Unable to describe the pain,
Of deepest darkest gloom.
But when I saw the sepulchre
Now open, gaping wide,
Incredulous, astonished,
I stooped and went inside.
‘He is not here, He’s Risen,
Come, be afraid no more’
The angel spoke, fears vanished, and
I knew, I knew, for sure.
I did not know God’s Mighty Power
Could break through prison wall
And thwart the wicked plans of men
In just no time at all:
Four squadrons of four soldiers,
Chains holding tight and fast,
I waited trial, waited death,
‘Neath shadow overcast.
But in the night a ‘visitor’
Appeared, accompanying me
Past soldiers, out through prison gates
To freedom, liberty!
Was this a dream? A vision?
Had God saved me from death’s claw?
My angel guide then vanished and
I knew, I knew, for sure.
I may not view a glorious host
Ablaze with glory bright
Singing the songs of Heaven,
At a time of darkest night.
I may not see deliverance
By an angelic guide
And gaze upon his beauty
As he walks close by my side.
BUT I’ve felt his peace and presence
When the fears of night take hold,
I’ve known weak cowardice replaced
By strength that’s good and bold.
I’ve watched loved ones
Protected and covered by His shield,
I’ve seen strong obstacles removed
And grace and truth revealed.
Oh yes, my God has promised
(Although my eyes are dim)
He sends His ministering angels
To those who follow Him.
The mighty hosts of heaven
Aid His saints to thus endure.
I do not need to see because
I know, I know, for sure.

It may just be my tone-deaf ears and twisted tongue, but I did struggle in the beginning. It felt a tiny bit forced, but I'm the first one to admit meter is not my expertise by any means.
I smiled when I saw you use myriad correctly. Jan (of Jan's Writing Basics on the message boards for those who haven't seen it, I'd urge you to check it out) would be proud. Your last verse really touched my heart. I could totally relate and would like to pretend if I weren't so tone deaf, I could write something so beautiful. For now, I'll be more than content in reading your poetry. :)
