I am writing You this resignation letter because I feel I can no longer carry the burden of ministry You have given me.
I feel there's little point to it all. I struggle for hours, trying to find inspiration, and when it comes all the hours I spend trying to get everything I write perfect are wasted, as there's little evidence of anyone reading it. Whatever I do, it’s never enough. It would be wonderful to get some recognition from somebody - anybody - but the responses I seem to get – if I'm lucky – are rejection letters, some of which are nicer than others.
I don't feel I am serving any useful purpose by continuing with this assignment, so if You can think of a ministry for which I'd be better suited, please reassign me.
Yours
Fred Upp
Dear Fred Upp,
I'm sorry you feel so frustrated with the ministry I gave you.
Actually, you are not alone in your feelings. I often receive letters like yours from battle-weary soldiers from all ministries within the church, including ministers, worship leaders, youth workers, community outreach volunteers and missionaries. What I have said to them, I now say to you.
It is not surprising that you feel the way you – and all these other faithful soldiers that I mentioned before – feel the way you do about your ministries. There is a reason why it is as difficult as it is: it is because every person in ministry of any kind is engaged in the conflict that rages on between good and evil. I can fully understand why you have become so battle-weary and discouraged. And who understands the limitations of the human race better than I, the One who created it?
Your weapon in the war to win souls for Me is your writing gift. I need writers every bit as much as I need healers, teachers, preachers, musicians and elders. My church is My army, and each soldier plays a vital part.
You say that you feel your ministry doesn't make a difference. Nothing could be further from the truth. Your ministry is one of sharing My words through teaching, encouraging, explaining and reaching out to the lost and hurting. Your ministry could not be more valuable, even if you cannot see the fruit.
I get the impression that Pride is whispering untruths in your ear and undermining your confidence. Please understand this: it doesn't matter how many times your pieces are read or how many positive reviews you receive. Nor does it matter whether you win competitions and publishing deals.
Your task is to write the words that I give you. Leave everything else to Me; I can do great things from the smallest of offerings. One life touched is mission accomplished.
For the reasons outlined above, I cannot accept your resignation. But I do advise you to do three things: firstly, before you write, pray; secondly, don’t let perfectionism get the better of you; and thirdly, remember the reason you began writing in the first place.
Now, I suggest you make a start. I believe you have an entry to this week’s Writing Challenge to submit…
Eternal love,
God
