Lord, how could I have been so blind?
Dave Mathers was a well-to-do, successful southern lawyer, whose clients were statewide. He had swept Annabella off her feet three years ago when she met him at a party in the village of St. Simon. He told her she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen, and asked her to be his date for the Queen of Hearts dance the following Friday. Then, two years ago he had asked her to marry him, just outside of a little ancient Christian church located in the center of the island.
Annabella was 22 years old at the time, and a devout Christian. However, as time went by, she lost her Christian values to the man she thought she would spend the rest of her life with. She had planned to remain a virgin until she married, but Dave changed her mind one passionate night. She told herself it was all right, that she would marry this man and be with him for life. That was her plan, until tonight.
Dave took her to dinner at their favorite restaurant. “I’m sorry, Annabella, I’ve met someone else.”
Annabella was so stunned, all she could think of to say was, “What?”
“You’re just too uptight, Annabella. I need a more socially adept woman to be my wife.”
Meeting Dave had changed Annabella in other ways, also. She had begun drinking while attending social events with him. Dave encouraged her by saying it loosened her up, but slowly, his attitude towards her began to change. He taunted her about her faith and stopped going to church with her, saying he just wasn’t as “in to God” as she was.
Now, she could see it all so clearly. His actions of the past year had flown many red flags, but Annabella had just poured herself another glass of wine and continued to see things through rose colored glasses. She tried so hard to be the person Dave wanted her to be, but somehow she failed.
Tonight, Annabella found herself at the little church where Dave had proposed and opened a bottle of wine she kept in her glove compartment. She took a long drink, and cried. Something inside propelled her out of the car and up the three steps of the tiny church. She reached for the door handle and found the door unlocked.
The small, beautiful sanctuary held a large picture of Christ behind a rose covered altar. Annabella stumbled slightly, but made it to a place where one could kneel and pray. She reached out and touched the portrait of her Savior and wept. Suddenly, she felt a warmth and comfort she had not felt in such a long time. She began to pray. “Lord, please help me.”
After a while, Annabella rose and walked back and sat down on an ancient pew, taking in the renewed beauty that had left her in the past three years. She then realized that she had given her life to Dave, instead of remaining true to Jesus Christ. Jesus spoke to her and made her realize all the mistakes she had made since meeting Dave, and how she had allowed him to control her life.
Annabella had made Dave Mathers her God.
Suddenly, an awesome light lit up the entire church, and Annabella felt the spirit of God rush into her soul. Her heart seemed to burst with love, and she knew she would be all right. She heard a voice, loud and clear, “You will love again, Annabella.”
Rising from the pew, she returned to the altar and knelt down. She poured out her heart and asked Jesus to allow her to make Him her Savior again, and felt a joyous peace within that ran throughout her entire being. She felt alive, refreshed, and new. She realized then that Dave Mathers no longer mattered. All that mattered was her relationship with God.
Annabella Jordan was born again.
