So brief,
this mortal life,
this fading flower,
that bloomed with transient beauty
the short hour.
Sweet, sweet, the memory ,
its rich perfume
descending softly on the empty room.
So brief!
The zephyr wind blew strong,
so strong,
upon the fading flower
and it was gone.

As tears fell
emerging truth and surety,
beneath the cushioning tenderness of God,
assured each mourning heart who trembling, trusted
even whilst adding
sorrow’s shovelled clod.
Yes, here
a loved one’s shell was laid down, honoured,
here thankfulness of memories expressed,
here moistened eyes were lifted, lifted higher
than this sad place of mortal earthy rest.
Here was a glimpse of shining radiant Glory,
Here strains of the redeemed sang loud their praise
And here sad, sorrowing hearts were warmed with comfort
By Heaven’s eternal golden shining rays…
Come, Lord Jesus, we too wait you,
Know, by faith, this truth firm, sure,
Heaven waits for all who love you
And Heaven is Home forevermore.
