escaped the battlefield. No more
trampled grass and tumbled rocks
or the wet smear of blood. No more
bites from hissing arrows
or the brattle of shields. No more
vultures dressed in mourning garb
gliding is lazy circles overhead
He thinks he is safe
resting in his palace. No troubles
as he rises slowly in the late morning
from cool sheets and a soft mattress. No troubles
as he drinks in the peaceful panorama
from a quiet rooftop. No troubles
he thinks, as temptation dressed in soft scented skin
steals into his mind
He thinks he can
possess her. No scruples
as he directs his men to her house
to bring her close. No scruples
as he so lightly plants his seed in
the field of her womb – another man’s field. No scruples
as lust, not even dressed as love,
fuses two bodies
He thinks he will be
found out and covers his tracks. No second thoughts
as he coldly plots the death of
an innocent man. No second thoughts
when he takes to wife
his pregnant lover. No second thoughts
how lust, not dressed at all, but quite naked
is judged by a covenant keeping God
He knows he can
Kill a bear or a lion
He knows he can
Fell a giant with a stone
He knows he can
Calm an angry spirit with a melody
Now he knows…yes, now he knows
He can’t take another man’s wife
And get away with it.
