Topic: Cat and Dog (09/04/14)
Dear Aunt Agatha

I'm writing to ask for advice about marriage.

First, some background:

Cathy and I were, in a sense, thrown together. We both needed a place to stay and this house was offered to both of us. That was when we started living together.

We've been together for over two years now, so I thought maybe we should tie the knot. My problem is that I'm not sure we're 100% suited. But I don't think any married couple is, really; we all have our differences. I've heard it's how you handle those differences that really counts. So I need your advice.

Cathy is rather moody and unpredictable. One minute she's all over me and the next, she doesn't want to know me. She's very independent and hates me to make any suggestions. If I do, she sometimes does the opposite, which I'm sure is just to show me who's boss. Passive aggression, I think they call it. She goes off for long walks on her own without telling me, sometimes staying out for the night and then coming home and acting as if that's quite normal. I get worried sick, but not her. That's when I'm convinced she doesn't love me and is just using me.

Sometimes we fight like cat and dog and it can get really nasty. Yet at other times she makes me feel like I'm the only one that ever matters. She's warm and loving and won't let me out of her sight. I just don't know where I am with her. One minute I'm in the dog box and the next moment I'm her lover and the centre of attention.

The other huge thing for me is her attitude to God. I love him with all of my heart. It's my greatest pleasure to sit at His feet and worship. He doesn't play a big role in her life.

It's difficult for me to talk about myself -- we all have our blind spots -- so I've asked her to write to you as well.

Dear Aunt Agatha

I'm writing this under duress. I personally think we could make up our own minds about these things, but Douglas has persuaded me that he's incapable of such mental strain.

I don't know what he's said about me (I haven't read his letter) and frankly, can't say I care.

No doubt he's told you how we met, but let me give my version. He didn't have much option about where to live. He couldn't find another place and obediently followed the suggestion that he stay here. I stayed of my own freewill. At first it was a huge inconvenience having him around, but I've come to like him. He has a soft, loving nature, which grows on you, although I know I'm always second best to God with him. He spends an inordinate amount of time with Him, in my opinion.

If I marry him, I'm afraid I'll be doing everything around the house. He sits around doing nothing. Well, that's not entirely true. He sometimes goes for walks, but I'd never go with him. I could never keep up. For someone who lolls around the house, the way he tears along when he walks is a metamorphosis worthy of being called miraculous. He can keep it.

Then there's the sensitive issue of odour. He doesn't wash and, frankly, he smells. How do I tell him that? And what do I do? Try to wash him? It's not just his body. Halitosis is too mild a word; dog's breath would be more apt.

So, that's all I've got to say.

Give your advice if it makes Douglas happy.

I'm so glad you wrote to me before you took the plunge.

I must admit, I gasped when I first read your letters. They say opposites attract, but how on earth did you two ever get to live together?

I know that some people say marriages are made in heaven and God has just the right person for you, while others say relationships are what you put into them; if you give your relationship priority, putting the other first and living in obedience to God's Word any marriage will work.

However, the Bible says that you should not be unequally yoked. Please take that seriously.

No dog should marry a cat.
