Thoughts raced around the mind -
As how to justly capture
On their canvas, as assigned,
An object of their choosing,
Creatively displayed
Awaiting reproduction
In bright colour, light and shade:
‘Just bring a thing of beauty,
A thing you treasure, or
An object of great usefulness
To paint or sketch or draw’
And there, so variably portrayed
Such cherished items on parade ……
A single rose of beauty
Each petal tightly curled,
A roll of glossy satin
Unravelling, unfurled,
A selection from a kitchen:
A teapot, bowl and jug,
A wicker trug of vegetables
From garden freshly dug.
An apple, orange, bunch of grapes,
A silken scarf’s fine sheen,
A child’s toy,
A bracelet gold,
A china figurine.
Then one, unsure and faltering
Unwrapped, with tenderest care
From folds of crumpled tissue
(as if supremely rare)
A china cup and saucer
Of undetermined age,
With moist eyes and with trembling hands
She placed it centre stage;
Some eyebrows lifted slightly
For it was hard to see
How such a cup and saucer
Could fit the categ’ry.
An article of usefulness,
A treasure of the heart?
The chipped and broken china
Did not seem to fit the part…
‘I see and understand that you
Are filled with some surprise
And wonder why I’ve chosen
For a treasured cherished prize
An age-d cup and saucer
That is only held by glue
I’d love to take a moment
And share its tale with you….
My life was once so different,
And in self-sufficient pride
I lived in wealth and riches
And so much else beside.
But once there came a crashing day
My towering empire fell
And of the years of heartbreak
I can’t begin to tell.
All my possessions vanished,
My treasures fell to dust
And in the ashes of despair
I came to love and trust
The One who came from Heaven
To save a wretch like me
That One is now my treasure
For all eternity.
This broken cup and saucer
Is all that now remains
Of the priceless china I once owned.
It’s a picture that explains
My life too has been broken
But my King in love and grace
Is tenderly restoring
His treasure piece by piece.
