Although tiny in stature, he’s a giant among those that know and love him. He’d been preparing for today for a little over a month, and could hardly remain seated as his dad neared their destination. The car wasn’t going quite as fast as Timmy wanted. He bit his lower lip and stared out the window, his hands rolled into tiny fists.
“You okay back there buddy?” Mike took a quick glance at his son in the rear-view mirror. He knew his son was over excited about the upcoming event.
“Yep.”
His father laughed, “You sure about that buddy?”
“Just don’t know why it’s taking longer than it normally does Dad.”
“Son, we’re in the car about five minutes. It’s ten minutes away, we’re almost there.”
Mike never fully grasped what parents were talking about before he had Timmy. When they’d brag or speak endlessly about their children, he’d look to flee as fast as he could. There were times, he thought he’d vomit. But that all changed when Timmy was born… and then he was part of the clan. “Welcome to parenthood…”
“Daddy? Do you think Mom is really in heaven?”
“Of course son, I have no doubt about it.”
“Well, because right before God took her to live with Him, she made a promise to me.”
“What was that Timmy?”
“That she’d send me a bestie as soon as she got to heaven. She said it might take a little time, but she'd work on it as soon as she got there.”
Tears welled in Mike’s eyes, “Well, if she said that, you’d better believe it. Mom has never broken a promise has she Timmy?”
Timmy shook his head and then let out a yelp as they pulled into the parking lot.
“So, here we are. Timmy, I think you need to perk up a bit. Come on show a little enthusiasm.” He laughed at the ongoing joke between the two.
“Yeah, I’ll try. He giggled. “Mommy liked when you were being facetious, remember? She taught me that word a long time ago.”
“Yes, she taught you a lot of new words. I remember everything about her Timmy.”
They walked slowly toward the building. A young man approached them immediately. “Can I help you?”
“We’re looking for a companion for my boy Timmy.”
“Sure thing. Okay Timmy, come this way.”
There were rows and rows of animals in cages, all waiting to be adopted. whimpering, barking, jumping….all hoping to be the one chosen.
Timmy took his time looking into each cage. And, then his eyes grew wide. “This is the one I want.”
The young man said, “No. He's no good. You don’t want that dog Timmy, come on I’ll show you some more. Follow me around this corridor there are a lot more.”
Timmy shook his head and stood his ground. “Nope. I want him.”
The young man insisted, “Timmy this dog isn't for you. He’s a lot of trouble. I have a young puppy around the corridor if you’ll just come take a look—”
“No! I said this is the one I want.”
Mike bent down and hugged Timmy, “Son, I’m so proud of you.” He stood up and said to the young man, “This is the one…please release him.”
The young man shrugged his shoulders and opened the cage. He placed the leash on the dog.
“Daddy…this is what Mom was talking about!"
Timmy lifted his tiny metal crutch and pointed toward the matted dog. "See? He has a leg missing just like me."
The dog’s long tail wagged quickly as he licked Timmy's hands.
Mike looked at the scrappy little white dog through tears and asked, “What will
you call him?”
“Bestie.”

Fantastic writing and I felt like I was right there with Timmy and Dad. He gave the right puppy the right master. What a joy to read!
You brought out the angelic blessedness of a child's mind and how there thoughts and actions reveal God's Spirit. God bless.
