One daughter was past due with baby, past being okay with that and long past looking for advice on how to bring on labor.
My other daughter was exhausted from long days of working and parenting and was looking forward to womanly company and lightheartedness.
Pedicures were our decided course of action.
It was late when we got together. I hoped we could find a place that could take us. A nail place had been highly recommended to me but the recommender couldn't remember the name of the place. "But," she'd said, "It's in the middle of the mall."
Guess what? There were two nail places and a salon in the middle of the mall.
Face-palm.
The salon was closed. Both nail places were jammed full of people. My daughter, the expectant mother, needed a 'restroom'. I inhaled and swallowed and started off another face-palm, but stop! We were there to relax and you can't relax when you need a bathroom.
That hurdle cleared, we bravely approached our choice of the two nail places and I stepped forward to inquire if there was time for three pedicures. I fully expected a scene not unlike the one in the 'Wizard of Oz' where the gatekeeper says, "Go away and come back tomorrow."
We, like they in Oz, did not have that option.
The young Asian woman nearest the door acknowledged our entry with the clipped words, "What you want?"
Timidly, I said, "Pedicures. ?"
"Yes, we can do - sit down."
Perfect. I'm relaxed. Isn't this perfect, daughters of mine?
The salon was crowded, too warm, and noisy. There was an Asian movie playing and it was complete with a cock fight. One of the roosters came to an unexpected 'end' at the hand of a young warrior.
Face-palm. What could be more relaxing?
My pregnant daughter was called to a chair to soak her feet. All eyes turned to her. 'What? Haven't any of these people ever seen a forty-one week pregnant woman before?' I had to wonder.
As she took the seat indicated, I heard the advice I knew she appreciated.
"You should try cleaning your whole house," said one well-wisher.
"Thank you, I did - twice."
"Try bouncing on an exercise ball."
"Thanks, I have," she answered.
"Stairs. Stairs will do it every time."
"Not this time," pregnant daughter was not pleased.
"Have you tried castor oil?"
"I guess I'm not that desperate."
"Have you tried -"
"If it's safe, I've tried it!" the well-wishers were cut off.
Face-palm. Did I mention we were there to relax?
Eventually, we all got our pedicures. During the process, my two daughters amused themselves by making up captions for the movie and texting them to each other. My phone is older and doesn't text as easily as theirs, so I just enjoyed the two of them.
We ended up enjoying our pedicures, being the last customers, getting to know the Asian couple who owned the business and then being personally escorted out of the mall through a dark, service hallway by mall security.
What could be nicer?
Next, we tried to find a place still open to get some food. My daughters tried to use their phones but they'd lost their charge. We found ourselves at a drive-thru with a misconstrued order. It wasn't what we'd pictured, but without phones to find anything better it was the best we could do.
"I can't believe that if we need a phone we have to depend on your retro one, Mom," non-pregnant daughter laughed.
We were all laughing at the way our 'girls' night out' had turned out and I was so pleased at how good a time we were having in spite of that(or as a result).
True, I still used a flip phone, but I wanted to let these two daughters know that I wasn't completely techno-deficient so, through laughter I asked, "How many face-palms did we do tonight?"
"Huh? What do you mean?" they asked.
"Face-palm, it's like this," I said and I put my palm over my face. "Do I actually know a term that you don't know?" I was overjoyed. It was a wonderfully, satisfying moment. But, alas, it was not to last!
"Mom, that's not a word you say. It's a texting thing!"
Well, lol!
