"Hey, Drift - you up to a challenge?" Fester asked.
"Yeah, but fat chance of that. There's no challenge here," Drift answered.
"Ah, C'mon." The two gazed at the same woman and then locked eyes above her. "Well, it'll be fun if nothing else," Fester argued.
"Yeah - okay, she'll do. She thinks she's beyond any trouble from us, thinks her faith is too strong! We'll have to see about that," Drift smiled.
"Sounds a little self-righteous to me. Hmmm let's see ... what shall we do?" Fester drummed his fingers on the counter top next to the woman's hand.
Melody Knudson typed a quick succession of keys, finishing her job and knowing she'd done well. She was pleased.
Drift floated past her work station just a hair's breadth away from skimming her cheek. He rattled her marker and it fell off the counter and rolled behind her on the floor.
Melody frowned at the noise then turned and bent to retrieve the marker. That's when she saw the book.
'What! Who in this department is reading that book? The book that that popular Christian movie is based on. Surely not Leona - if it's not about her or her accomplishments this department manager wouldn't read it,' Melody was disgusted.
"Hey Drift, that was too easy. Watch me now - I'm going to throw in a little pride," Fester showed off his skill.
Melody shook her head even as she thought to herself that she probably wouldn't read the book either. 'That's because I'm firm in my faith, I don't need to read every trendy new book that comes along.' she told herself.
"Nice, Fester, now watch me. I'm going to ---" He didn't get to finish. Melody was lifting the cover out of her own curiosity.
Hey! It wasn't me!" Drift threw his hands up in mock surrender. "This chick's way too easy to mess with. She's doing this all on her own."
Melody looked at the first page and was disgusted to see the 'T.F.' written there. 'Are you kidding me? How dare she have this book here? She is so obviously not a Christian - I hope she's not anyway. Wait - that's not the right thing to think - but she's so miserable. She's not living like a Christian should. She makes everyone around her miserable, too. And she enjoys doing it! Oh, she gets me mad even when she's not here!'
"Well, well, well!" Fester smiled an evil smile and dusted his hands off. "You were right, Drift. No challenge here. Why this little 'Christian' is one big mess of self-righteousness, pride and judgment. Seems like maybe she keeps track of wrongs, too - isn't that in her 'Good Book' somewhere?"
"Uh, you mean I Corinthians 13:5?," Drift pretended studiousness and Fester made a face at him. They both watched Melody.
She closed the book but continued to be annoyed. When she left work for the day she walked out with her co-worker, Gina.
"Hey Mel', well another day closer to Friday, huh? Did you hear what T.F. said about us this morning?" she asked.
The demons hovered near. "Oh, Fes!" Drift put his hands mockingly over his ears. "I hope this isn't gossip!"
Fester put his hand to his mouth in mock horror.
"What now?" Melody asked.
"T.F. found a scrap of paper on the counter. It should have gone to the shredder. She said, 'What, now I have to clean up after them too?'" Gina explained.
"Well, have you seen the book she's reading?" Melody asked.
"What book?" Gina wanted to know.
"The movie one," Melody described the story.
Fester nudged Drift. "Hey, let's get out of here. Look over there."
An angel hovered protectively near the women.
Gina said, "She could be reading something much worse."
"Yeah, but don't you see - she could be like one of those people who have a fish insignia on their car but drive like speed demons and yell at other drivers. It's bad for the faith." Melody tried to explain why it bothered her so much.
"Yeah," Gina was thinking.
The angel stayed near and loosed Gina's tongue to ask a question.
"Exactly what does that fish mean? I've never gotten that."
"The fish?" Melody forgot her previous annoyance and warmed toward Gina. She was compassionate as she began to explain about the fish.
