It isn’t even breakfast time
but, with a sigh,
my eye falls on a filing tray -
and papers high
call like a petulant young child
with whining cry.
Reminder notes of emails that
arrived last night
for diplomatic answering
and wording right,
and urgent inspiration, ‘cos
deadlines are tight,
A cluster of awaiting bills
demanding pay
need access to a bank on-line
without delay
and I can’t put that job off yet
another day.
Long Minutes for deciphering
of meetings past,
targets to meet, phone calls to make,
I pause, aghast,
at cumulative PC tasks
arrayed, amassed.
Switch on! The screen awakens to
another day,
but ‘blazoned there, before my eyes,
on the display
a pertinent reminder, takes
my breath away.
‘Be still’, the words with power read,
‘Be still and know
that I am alone am God indeed’,
the tidal flow
of all those urgent pressing needs
begins to slow.
‘Be still’ before my God and King,
how can it be
that I could rush into a day
forgetfully?
I disconnect, leaving for now
technology.
There’s hidden manna in His Word,
rich treasure there
that feeds, restores my battered soul
with jewels rare
He draws me to His side in this
sweet hour of prayer.
The minutes pass, unnoticed are
the ticking clocks,
jobs wait, now growing fainter their
persistent knocks,
sweetest communion with my God.
Needful detox.
It is the time to re-connect,
in doing find
the peace and presence of my God
endlessly kind:
I face the day and tasks ahead
with renewed mind.
