warms the shivering earth, and new life emerges
Birds sing as gentle rains birth beauty
Flowers bloom, trees leaves unfurl
and senses are delighted
Abundant miracles daily--why?
Our Creator loves us
We are to be His caretakers but greed
continues to chop down forests,
scar meadows with malls, and blacken hearts
God filled rivers, lakes and oceans with life
that have been captured in masses to
stock restaurant kitchens and grocery cases
with more than they need--while
barges, ocean liners and corporations
pollute the waters without regard
killing fish, plant life and sea creatures
Long ago the desire for more began humanity’s decline
You remember, don’t you?
It happened on a day wrapped in sunshine
and scented with the perfume of exotic flowers
Warbled melodies pleased the ears and
all was right with the world until. . .
The tempter came hissing venomous lies using greed as bait
The fruit was plucked from the forbidden tree,
its juice still dripping from Eve’s lips
as she offered Adam its sweet taste
Willingly he shared in her disobedience
Once they knew a life of ease
filled with pleasures beyond compare
Their world was one of peace, love and joy
Everything--absolutely all they needed
was at their disposal day and night
They risked it all for a moments pleasure inspired by greed
God was watching
Now they knew pain, sorrow, shame, turmoil, even death
Wanting more but getting so much less
Still today we live in the shadow of that original sin
while greed is ever increasing

God bless~
Great job with this. Way to show that Christians can care about the environment too. So many environmentalists seem to think that a desire for a clean and safe Earth precludes belief in God. They forget who made everything so perfectly in the first place. You beautiful poem reminds me how the sin brought into the world has tainted everything.
Also liked the title--very appropriate.
My bit of red ink--when I read poems with little punctuation I constantly find myself adding it in and that ruins the flow of the poem. Maybe that is more of my problem than the author's!
