Why is it I never get ahead
The muck of life is quicksand thick
Again I draw the shortest stick
My face rarely beams a smile
New friends linger just awhile
Routine days lack inspiration
What is my calling, my destination
“Eyeore”, a nickname I acquired
Long ago when I was hired
To assist the town’s one mortician
I fizzled out as the town’s beautician
One Autumn day the sun glowed bright
Much like the moon the other night
But somehow, someway, newly aware
I’ve become of the wonders ev’rywhere
I studied a neighbor’s painted mums
And surprised myself with cautious hums
Then a warbler’s song caught my attention
Happy notes deserving honorable mention
The sky’s no bluer than before
But today I noticed its beauty more
Whoa--could that be zip in my step
Eagerly walking to work with pep
Old Joe’s morgue didn’t reek of doom
Fresh flowers exude sweet perfumes
A stylish hairdo I gave Miss Trixie
So cute--she would’ve loved this pixie
No need for small talk conversations
These clients have reached their destinations
With new attitude my scissored art
Tidies up the beard of “Buffalo” Bart
Could it be that these departed people
Now point me to the church’s steeple
I open the Bible in the morgue
Psalm twenty-three, slowly absorbs
Paying a visit to the town’s one pastor
I learn my future’s not meant for disaster
No more will I accept short ends
Rather on His love I shall depend
