Sometimes you have to light a fire under a person to get them to act. I wouldn't have guessed it with this guy. I mean I could see his potential right from the get- go. Energy, optimism, smarts - he's really got it together. As somebody who sees a need for change and wants to make a difference, he sure can 'talk the talk'.
"I've come to change the world," he says.
I say, "Bring it!"
"I'll teach you better ways, perfect ways," he promises.
I say, "Do it!"
"I have overcome the enemy," he announces.
(Well, you gotta admire his optimism.)
But if he's going to do all that he says, he needs to get to the 'doing'. That's why I plan to 'light that fire.' I mean if I leave it to him, this'll end up being just another 'pie-in-the-sky' dream - another dead end. He tends to be a little passive. We need to enlighten him about this world, capitalize on his abilities and push him in the right direction.
When I talk about his 'abilities', well, you'd be surprised. He can do things. You know- like he can change things into something that they weren't before! Seriously. And he heals people! I don't know how he does it. And he can outwit anyone! I have yet to see him lose any kind of debate. And - oh yeah, there's this - he talks to God, I mean talks to him - like he's right there - weird!
And get this - He does these crazy, miraculous things and then he says, "Keep this quiet. Don't tell anybody."
At first, I didn't like that. It was frustrating. Then I thought about it. Sure, it makes sense. Build the army quietly, secretly. Keep gathering followers without any of the 'powers-that-be' catching wind of it. Before you know it there'll be so many of us they'll never know what hit them.
But now, just when everything's really heating up, when he could take them down, he goes all passive and philosophical. He's even wasting resources that he could stockpile. Get this - the other night we're all having our meal and in comes some wench. Well, he likes women; I mean he treats them with the respect that you'd save for a man. (I know, radical, right?)
Well, this woman (she couldn't have understood the way I did - what a huge waste) she pours out an entire bottle of perfume, that's a year's wages, ON HIS FEET! I could hardly stand it! Does he or anybody have any idea what I could have done if I could have had that bottle, and sold it??? So much money!
But no! He has his own crazy idea. (His thoughts sure aren't my thoughts.)1 He says, "It was intended for the day of my burial."3
Burial?! I don't think so. He has a job to do first and I'll see that he gets it done. Yeah, let's just see what he does when I bring him a little trouble, nothing too serious, mind you. I figure I bring some of his enemies around, 'give him up' so to speak. That should work to 'light a fire under him'. He'll soon show what he can do and what he's worth.
Me? I won't let this be a dead end. There's a way that seems right to me.2 It's very clear. Count on me to be a catalyst of change and of surprising endings.
