Sad, despondent, confused,
Walk and talk on the Emmaus Road.
We two, who had been so full of hope,
So sure of this Jesus, the redeemer of Israel,
Surely he is the one to save us from the tyranny of Rome.
We two, who had so eagerly followed,
Listened to him teach, been amazed at his wisdom,
Witnessed the healings and miracles,
Had we blindly followed?
We two, walking, talking, wondering,
So many questions. Had we been led astray?
Why had this worker of miracles been condemned to death?
Why did he die? If the tomb is truly empty, where is he now?
Was he a trickster, a deceiver?
We two, my friend and I
Sad, despondent, confused
Walk and talk on the Emmaus Road.
We two, joined by a stranger,
“Why so sad?’ he asks
“What! Haven’t you heard? Don’t you know about this Jesus from Nazareth?
Mighty teacher, healer, hope of Israel,
Now dead, crucified,--
empty tomb, empty promises…”
We two, listen to this stranger as he begins to talk--
Strangely, our steps grow lighter, our hearts lift, peacefulness replaces our confusion.
Who is this man, this stranger?
We two, invite the stranger, beg him to stay for our evening meal,
So much more we want to know, please don’t leave,
Tell us more…
We three, sit together to partake—
He prays the blessing, breaks the bread—
And then we know!
We know! It is Him! Jesus the Christ! Alive!
We two, my friend and I
Look at each other in delight and amazement—He is alive! No longer dead!
We must tell the good news!
We two, my friend and I
Joyful, hopeful, believing
Run and shout on the Emmaus Road,
All the way back to Jerusalem,
The tomb is empty! He is alive! He is alive!
The grave is not the end! Jesus Christ is alive!
