Was the sea above me,
Where occasional white vessels
Sailed to distant destinations.
The ocean of sky turned darker
When a powerful unseen hand
Dimmed the light.
In a trice, a variety of colors
Began to obliterate
The endlessness of blue.
I watched in awe
As a picture unfolded,
Created by that same hand,
Still unseen.
The first stroke was the merest blush,
Pink’s palest echo of red.
Vibrant orange was edged in next,
Enlivened by a field of daisy yellows.
Bands of gaudy magenta
Were painted in
To embroider a bouquet of rubies
Beside ridges of deep purple.
A huge gilded ball
Overlaid this exalted display,
Emblazoning the whole.
The glorious hues shifted shapes
And traded places
Like children at play.
I almost held my breath
To be audience
To such magnificence.
Although I was alone,
I thought I heard a voice
Say, “It is good.”
As the unseen hand
Dropped evening’s curtain,
The banner of brightness
Slowly fled away
Till blackness covered all,
And my heart swelled
With reverence
For the Artist
Of this masterpiece.
