supper being ended, Jesus rises from the table.
Voices hush, faces turn expectantly toward their master,
What is he about to teach them?
In the silence of the room,
Water pours from the pitcher and splashes into the basin,
The master, towel around his waist, kneels before his men
And tenderly washes feet.
In the confusion of his soul,
Simon Peter cries, “No, no! You cannot wash my feet!”
But Jesus, knowing the impetuousness of Peter says,
“You may not understand now, but you will later.”
With the humbleness of a servant,
Jesus washes the disciple’s feet, even those of his betrayer.
Sitting down again, he says, “As your Master, I have washed your feet.
Do to others as I have done unto you. This will bring you happiness.”
In obedience to our Lord,
We become as servants, a life poured out,
Splashing God’s love
As we humbly, lovingly wash each other’s feet.
