Saw visions, God’s messages--future plans of His design,
I played a worthless shepherd who cared not for his sheep
My flock was led to slaughter but their shepherds did not weep
Two staffs were given names--one called Beauty, stood for Grace
The other, Bonds or Unity stood for nations God embraced,
I tended the flock for slaughter, the most miserable of sheep--
Fired three mean shepherds--civil authorities, prophets and priests
The staff called Grace, I cut in two while those watching understood
God’s word broke the covenant once intended for their good,
I’ll no longer be your shepherd, I’ll leave you to yourselves
My wage, thirty silver coins was an insult from their wealth
I threw them to the potter as the Lord instructed me
Then broke the staff, “Bonds” in two--for there was no unity
And then God spoke again, “Take up another shepherd’s staff,
But be worthless, even wicked--do not a thing on their behalf”
Between Judah and Israel it was clearly made known
Their brotherly bond was broken, God’s verdict from His throne,
God’s wrath burned against the fools whose actions He abhorred
The punishment He pronounced--they’d be stricken by a sword
But God promised deliverance and in due time it was fulfilled--
The Good Shepherd paid our ransom from a cross on Golgotha’s hill
Let us not be led astray, please Lord, you be our guide
Help us walk the narrow road, evil lurks on roads too wide.
