Something dreadful happens at dusk
Each night
When the stars fling out a twinkling sky
And lights flick on to illuminate
Dark rooms
It’s then when something dreadful happens
At dusk
In our neighbourhood
The park
Our pride and joy
Where birds sing dawn ‘til dusk
Each day
And kiddies play while old folk stroll
And cogitate
Deliberate
On days gone by
Our park
Our haven by day
But never by night
Unearthly sounds disturb the air
Curious
Bizarre
Unlike the singing bat
In courtship song
Nor the hooting Tawny Owl
But something inexplicable
Disturbing
In our park
Our pride and joy
In the night
Our Neighbourhood Watch must act
Investigate
Lest the ‘Beast of Bodmin Moor’ prowls
Hungry
Salivating
Waiting to devour
Anything that smells of blood
There are no takers
Every member falls ill
Mysteriously unable to participate
There is no peace
At night as blinds are closed
Un-nerved dogs pace
And howl
Cats hiss
And arch their furry backs
While babies cry for mama
We turn to our church
Who suggest
Dark goings on
Evil
Malevolence
Heaped on our heads
The guilt
All of us
One of us
Is it me?
The graveyard falls strangely silent
No visits
No flowers
No tears
Implies that our park
May be host after dark
To spirits of lost ones
In limbo
Our village
Homely
Welcoming once
Is bereft
Fanciful folklore
The vicar
That demon
Get shut and good riddance
He’s out on his ear
But the grotesque wailing
Will not cease
To perturb
And unhinge
Equilibrium
At dusk
In our park
The Law is suggested
A vote
Unanimous
Bar one
Agreed in principle
Not I though
No definitely not I
They came with their dogs
Sniffing
Trampling
Listening
The spirits were silent
That night
Not mine though
Not I
I refuse to be muted
Using all my reserve
I struck up a chord
And they scarpered
Those dogs
Cops and all
They returned with handcuffs
And led me away
To a cell at the station
In town
In our village
I’ve lived all my life
And I sing
In the bath
And the loo and
The park
And I sing after dark
Our park
In our village
Our pride and joy
The following day
The magistrate asked
‘Is there anything you’d like to confess?’
‘Yes sir
There’s something
Just one thing that’s all
I’m not gifted with much in this life
But the book that I’ve sworn upon
‘To speak the truth
The whole truth … so help me God’
Is The Word I adhere to
As best as I can
Its author is living and powerful and true
In His book are the words of life
When God speaks to my heart …
He doesn’t say sing
Me a song and rejoice
For He knows full well
That there’s no sound in Hell
To compare with my horrible voice!
On the contrary sir
He says
‘Make a joyful noise unto the Lord’
You may dislike it but …
God LOVES it!
