One suffocating summer day,
As sun beat down with powerful ray,
Sam rode, with care, danger’s highway.
Menacing rocks hung overhead
Dark’ning the path his donkey sped
Whilst hidden caves lay just ahead.
Eerily still, no soft breeze stirred,
No sign of life, no spoken word,
No trill of gentle bird song heard.
Through crime-infested territ’ry,
Sam soldiered on courageously,
His journey a necessity.
Then round the bend, towards him came
A robed figure, Abbott his name,
Well recognised, for priestly fame.
A man well used to grand display,
Performance fine in great array,
But stony face gave him away.
He swept on past with pomp and style
No greeting, friendly word or smile,
No lingering to talk a-while.
Aware of danger’s near affray
Sam would have liked to ride that day
With a companion on his way.
Knowing the path got harder still,
Dark rocky crag, steep jagged hill,
He mustered courage, strengthened will.
And quick’ning on his way he sped,
Silencing lonely fear and dread,
Then recognised Levi ahead.
Int’rupted by a whimpering groan
Sam turned to see, there lying prone
A broken man, dying, alone.
He called to Levi, ‘Quick, we need
To help this man and stem his bleed’ -
Levi was gone, with rapid speed,
Sam gently wiped the blood and gore
And filled a cup, so he could pour
Out oil and wine on lesions sore.
Unheeding personal danger, Sam
Dressed, nursed and helped the dying man –
A Jew and a Samaritan.
Your acts of love and sympathy
The Saviour does perceive and see,
‘For what you did, you did for Me’ -
When hungry, you did with Me sup,
When thirsty shared your brimming cup
When suffering, helped to lift Me up.
Come, eat now, drink and share with Me
The cup of joy eternally,
A place in Heaven, reserved for thee.
